1. How To Set Up A Google Hangout
Setting up a Google Hangout for your business is super easy. As you can see below there is a difference between a 'Google Hangout' and a 'Hangout On Air'. you want the latter. Think of it as a broadcast - you're 'live on air'.
Simply hover over the 'Home' icon at the top left hand corner. The main navigation will come up. Over half way down you'll see the option for 'Hangouts On Air'.
Once you click that, you'll see a screen like the one below. Here you can browse through all the Hangouts that are currently broadcasting live. This is really good because people can stumble across your content.
But at the same time, it emphasises the point about having a compelling and engaging title to encourage people to click. Here's a video on how to write attention-grabbing titles.
In the top right hand corner you'll see a blue button 'Start Hangout On Air'.
Once you click that button you'll see a screen that look like the one below. This is where you will input that awesome and compelling title. Don't neglect this part! This is is what will ultimately grab people's attention and make them want to watch you (if they stumble across your content.)
Once you've filled in the necessary info click the green button anf have a good show!
2. How To Promote Your Google Hangout
Remember, this is a show or a programme. You need to treat it and promote it in the same way as your favourite TV show.
First thing you need to do is to create a simple advert. Below is the general ad I've created for my show, 'Haroon's Hangout'. You can mock up something simple in any free programme. For this I used Sketchbook Express (Mac users). PC users can use Inkscape.
As you can see I've kept it very simple. Include an image of yourself. Remember people do business with people, not logos. Ultimately it will be you speaking on the Hangout, not your logo.
Secondly I have named my Hangout with a short, memorable title.
Thirdly I have said what the Hangout is all about. You should be able to summarise this in a simple sentence. If you can't do that, then you're not ready to do Hangouts yet!
Fourthly, tell people when you air! Cut the copy down to the bare minimum. People don't want to read lots of text. They should be able to glance your ad and get a feel for what it's about and the details.
Finally I have included the Google Hangout logo. Again, I've kept the text to a minimum. People can look at the logo and understand it's on Google+. You don't need to write it down in long-form prose.
3. Create A Landing Page For Your Google Hangout
Once you have the advert designed, you need to create a landing page. Here is the landing page for Haroon's Hangout'.
The landing page will act as an informative tool so people can understand more about your show. Outline succinctly what benefits your audience will get as a result of watching you. Remember, you have to convince them to give up their precious time to watch you! It's a privilege to have people give up their time for you. Convince them!
If optimised properly then you can rank in the search engine results for phrases related to your industry.
Well, I never saw Casablanca, but apparently it's a big deal. Oh! Hey! Hey, sports fans! Haroon Rashid, Khemeia Consulting and welcome to Haroon's Hangout where we make digital marketing simple, straight forward and fun! Welcome to today's episode. It's episode eleven which is how to use Google Hangouts for business - Google Strategies.
Today's episode is for anybody who is starting to use Google Plus and maybe you're getting to grips with it and trying to generate leads through Google Plus. Maybe you've heard of Google Hangouts, maybe you haven't. And maybe you think, "Well how do I set up Google Hangouts? How do I get started with Google Hangouts? How do I use Google Hangouts for business? And how can I get people to watch me? And that's what I'm going to be sharing with you today. So, diving straight in.
Number one - What are Google Hangouts? Well Google Hangouts are a part of Google's social network which is Google Plus. So on Google Plus you have an option called Google Hangouts where you can stream something or broadcast something live. That's all it is. You just use your web cam and there you go! You just stream something live.
So why would you use a Google Hangout? Well, it's a way for you to broadcast or stream content live and also it's a way for you to build up some other content as you can stream these live to your YouTube channel. It's a way for you to demonstrate your authority or your expertise in your industry. It's a way for you to engage with people online (that you might not have been able to do before) and it's a way for you to create content in the form of a show or a programme - which is a bit different to what all the other social networks offer.
So, How do I set up a Google Hangout? Well if you have a Google account, you'll have a Google Plus account. And when you're on Google Plus, on your homepage, just go on the top left hand side and you'll see 'Home' If you hover over 'Home' the main navigation will just open up and around about three quarters of the way down, you'll see an option saying 'Hangouts On Air'. And that's the one that you really need. Hangouts On Air are the ones that you can broadcast. So when you click on that, if it's your first time, it will take you to another page where you can download some free software (it only takes a few minutes to do that) and then you're all set up. Google will then also ask you to connect your Google account, your Google Plus account sorry, to a YouTube channel. That means when you're streaming live or when you're broadcasting on your Hangout it automatically gets streamed live to your YouTube channel, which is great because then you actually have a YouTube video at the end of it - that you don't ned to do anything with. You've got an extra piece of content. And that's really cool because then you can start to promote that YouTube video, and then you can embed it in your blog or on your website. And that's what you want because that's going to boost your SEO. OK. If you're looking at this on the blog khemeiaconsulting.com/blog you can check out the show notes and I'm going to show you how to do all this with some screen grabs and everything. So don't worry if you're not picking out all of this up.
So how do I use Google Hangouts for business? Well, I would say you need to approach it as a publisher of content. You need to think like a publisher or you need to think like a TV show would. So, if you're broadcasting live, you need to make sure that that content is worth watching. And hopefully you think that this is worth watching! (Laughs) But you need to, you need to think of it as your own TV show. So what I do - I called my Hangout, 'Haroon's Hangout'. I've given it a name. Something that's short and memorable, number one. And I refer to it as 'my show' or 'my programme'. And people have started to understand the branding of my show now. they know that it's all about digital marketing tips and I'm on every Wednesday at 10am. Just like your favourite TV show, you know, maybe it's on a Saturday or whenever, it's on every week at a day at a certain time. And that's how you need to approach your show. So maybe make it a weekly show, maybe it's a fortnightly thing or a monthly thing - but there needs to be some consistency with your programme. Otherwise it's going to be hard for you to build up an audience. If people are expecting you to be on a certain day at a certain time you are much more likely going to build up a following.
The other thing I've done is I've created ads - so I've created like, you know, graphics with my picture and you know, saying "Haroon's Hangout, every Wednesday at 10am," and I promote that on our social media networks. And people are seeing this thing. And they're seeing that it's - it's going in their mind like, "OK, every Wednesday I know that Haroon's going to be on Google Plus, Wednesdays at 10 and he's going to be talking about something around digital marketing, around SEO tips or social media tips." OK. So if you do that, treat it like a show, promote it like a TV show you will start to get some traction. What will happen is that when you've got your YouTube video at the end of it (because remember you stream live to YouTube), you can then start to promote that in your blog and on your other social networks and you can start to get traffic. Because maybe not everybody can join you at the time that you're going to broadcasting live - and that's fine. But having the YouTube video helps you to reach those people that wouldn't have been able to join you first of all.
OK so, I'm going to leave it there guys. I hope that you found it useful. Remember you can always go on the blog and check out all the show notes where I'm going to go into some of this stuff in a lot more detail. There'll be a link to my landing page for Haroon's Hangout in the video description in YouTube and on the blog in the show notes, where you can maybe pick up some tips and see how I promote my Hangout and how I'm starting to rank for some really cool phrases on page one of Google. Join me every Wednesday at 10am Greenwich Meridian Time where we make digital marketing simple, straight forward and fun. And from me and Elmo, we'll see you next week.
